Solutions – Restaurants, accommodation and events
They ring for a table just when the dining room is full.
The waiter is carrying four plates and the kitchen is already shouting for table seven. The phone on the bar rings: someone wants a table for Saturday, someone else the function room for a christening. The agent answers, checks what’s free and notes every detail with the booking.

The problem
Where the money slips away
Four situations in which this line of work most often loses a customer. You’ve probably had at least one this week.
Bookings at the worst moment
People ask for a table for tonight between six and eight, right in the middle of dinner service. If nobody answers then, at nine you have an empty table.
Celebrations are arranged weeks ahead
Children’s birthdays, christenings, weddings, office parties. The questions are always the same: is the date free, how many people fit and what’s on the menu. The agent checks the date, notes what the guest wants and books a viewing of the room.
People look for somewhere to stay at all hours
Calls about apartments and rooms come from people in other towns and from the diaspora, often late in the evening. The agent answers from what you’ve entered: the price per night, the check-in time, how far it is to the centre. To book, it takes the name, number and a message, which reaches you by email straight away, and you get back to the guest.
Every question takes someone away from a table
What time does the kitchen close, do you have Lenten dishes, can we bring the dog, is there parking. For each of those questions the waiter leaves a guest who’s already seated and waiting for the bill.
Sample conversation
What it sounds like on the phone
An ordinary call, the kind you get on a Tuesday around noon.
Good evening, I need a table for six on Saturday, around eight. Have you got one?
Yes, both in the garden and inside. Which would you prefer?
The garden. And we need a high chair, we’re bringing a baby.
Fine, I’ll add the high chair. Saturday at 20:00, six people, the garden. What name is it under?
Milanović. Thanks, see you then.

Common questions
What people ask us most
Does the agent know what’s on the menu today?
Yes, if you’ve entered it: the regular menu, prices, the daily specials if you update them regularly, what’s Lenten or gluten-free. When someone asks about allergies, the agent doesn’t guess. It transfers the call or takes a message.
Can the agent agree a menu for a celebration?
No. It notes the date, the number of guests, the kind of celebration and the budget if the guest mentions one, then books you a meeting or a viewing of the room. You agree the menu and price yourself, in person.
